JOHN STEINBECK FBI FILES

120 pages of files copied from FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., that the Bureau has on John Ernst Steinbeck. The subject matter of Steinbeck's work put him under suspicion of the FBI for being a communist. The Bureau was concerned that his writings was being used as anti-American propaganda by Nazis and Communists. The files indicates that Steinbeck once wrote to Attorney General Francis Biddle asking, "Do you suppose you could ask Edgar's boys to stop stepping on my heels? It's getting tiresome."
